MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine applied plenty of offensive pressure and All-American candidate Lynn Williams provided the finish in a 1-0 shutout victory against Gonzaga Friday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. The Waves (6-3-2; 1-0-0 WCC) controlled the tempo and play for the majority of the match against the Bulldogs (4-6-1; 0-1-0 WCC) in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams.
Despite several legitimate scoring chances, Pepperdine and Gonzaga were scoreless until the 54th minute. Ally Holtz (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou HS) started the decisive play of the match, intercepting a pass, weaving through defenders before finding Kristen Rodriguez (Inglewood, Claif./Notre Dame Academy) who sent a through ball to a streaking Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) who finished to the far post from 10 yards.
It was the WCC-leading 10th goal of the season for Williams, who needed just 11 matches to crack double-digit goals for the first time in her standout career. With assists from Holtz and Rodriguez, the junior tallied her 10th career game-winner, good for fourth place on the Pepperdine all-time list.
Pepperdine continued to create plenty of scoring chances and outshot the Zags 24-6 with 12 shots each half. Williams led the way with a match-high eight, three on goal, while All-American Michelle Pao (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista HS) added seven, two on frame. Rodriguez chipped in with five shots, three on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) turned in her fourth shutout of the season in her first league start. Seabert corralled six saves on six shot by the Bulldogs, improving to 6-3-2 in her inaugural collegiate season. Christie Tombari suffered the loss for Gonzaga, finishing the match with seven saves.
Pepperdine wraps up its six-match homestand when it welcomes No. 7 Portland Sunday, October 13. Match time against the Pilots is set for 1:00 p.m. in a match broadcast live on PepperdineSports.com via WaveCasts.
