Wehan’s Penalty in OT Lifts Lobos 1-0
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The University of New Mexico men's soccer team has been carried lately by redshirt juniorChris Wehan. That continued Friday night as he scored the only goal in UNM's 1-0 overtime win at CSUN on a penalty in the 95th minute.
"This was a really good win," UNM's head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. "We watched their previous three games and this is by far the best they've played. It was a big night for them. It was a great crowd and they were really energized."
The No. 21 Lobos (2-1-1) gained an advantage early in overtime as CSUN's Tanner Snedigar earned his second yellow and was sent off. UNM used the man advantage to press its attack. Niko Hansen took on several players and drew the call in the box after attacking the net, and Wehan coolly converted into the lower left corner to give the Lobos the win and net his fifth goal in his last three games.
"We were fortunate to get that call," said Fishbein, "but Niko beat three guys to draw the foul. He did really well, and Wehan confidently put it away.)
The Matadors recorded all three shots on goal in the first half. However, none of them were particularly dangerous, and the Lobo's keeper, Jason Beaulieu, easily saved them all. CSUN led 5-2 in shots in the first half. Those were the only shots on goal the Matadors would record all game.
"The statistics might be a bit misleading," Fishbein said. "They didn't really have any good chances. It was a really good defensive effort. Our guys were disciplined, and we didn't give up many fouls."
The second 45 minutes saw an increase in action around CSUN's goal. Niko Hansen had a couple of chances in the box in the 56th minute, but the Matador's keeper made the save both times. However, neither side was able to break the ice, despite a 6-2 shot advantage for the Lobos.
"This was an important win for us," Fishbein said. "We defended, we were focused, and we were really unified. I'm proud of the guys."
