WILDCAT MEN BLANK #18 POST, 4-0 IN SOCCER
NEW CASTLE, DE -- Eddie Kowalo and Manny Payton each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Wildcats of Wilmington University to a 4-0 statement victory over the 18th ranked Post University Eagles in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
Wilmington (3-1-1 CACC/4-4-3) was not fazed by the Eagles, who entered the game ranked number 18 in the latest NSCAA Division II National Poll, and got on the board just two minutes in to the game. Payton took a through ball from Kowalo and deposited it in the back of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. That one-goal advantage would hold until haflftime, as the ‘Cats went into the break up by one.
The Wildcats’ Kresimir Nurnberger received a through pass from Ray Kuemmer during the 62nd minute, and chipped it over the Post keeper’s head. Just six minutes later Kowalo then finished a pass from Payton to make it 3-0 in favor of the green and white. Tommy Quaranta rounded out the scoring during the 89th minute as he stole the ball from an Eagle defender and buried it in the back of the net.
Spyros Stergiotis recorded six saves in goal for Wilmington, as he picked up his second shutout of the season. Errol Ried recorded two saves in net for Post (4-1-2 CACC/5-1-4), before giving way to Jay Benton (two saves, one goal allowed) for the game’s final six minutes. The shots were tied at 12 apiece, while Post held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Wilmington returns to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon, when they host the Chargers of Dominican College in a CACC contest beginning at 3:30 PM.
