WILDCATS EDGED BY #6 FRANKLIN PIERCE, 1-0 IN MEN’S SOCCER
RINDGE, NH -- The #6 ranked Franklin Pierce University men’s soccer used a late goal to edge the visiting Wildcats of Wilmington University, 1-0 in non-conference men’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Sodexo Field.
The Ravens’ Tom Reilly scored the game-winner in the 80th minute, as he finished a header pass from Trent Roy, which came from off a corner kick. Wilmington struggled to find their rhythm offensively all afternoon, and didn’t get off a shot until there were 15 minutes off in regulation. It was the Wildcats’ only shot on the day, and it was turned away by the Franklin Pierce goalkeeper.
Wilmington freshman keeper Spryos Stergiotis notched four saves, while Franklin Pierce’s Vinny Papageorgiou turned away the only Wildcat attempt. The Ravens held a distinct 16-1 advantage in shots, and also had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 0-2-1 on the season, while Franklin Pierce improved to 2-0 to start the year. The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to take on Merrimack College in a game beginning at 4:00 PM.
