Wildcats top Grizzlies on late goal
October 13, 2011
Weber State’s Tianna Woodhead headed in the game-winner off a corner kick in the 82nd minute to give the Wildcats a 1-0 victory over Montana Thursday afternoon at the Wildcat Soccer Field in Ogden, Utah.
Weber State (5-8-1, 3-0-1 BSC) takes over sole possession of first place in the Big Sky Conference with the win and extended its recent stretch of charmed results.
The Wildcats topped Idaho State 1-0 on a goal in the 90th minute in their league opener, defeated Northern Colorado 2-1 in the 102nd minute last weekend and downed Montana in the 82nd minute Thursday.
WSU, which has yet to lose in four Big Sky matches after entering league play 2-8-0, also had a 1-1 draw with Northern Arizona.
Montana dropped to 1-2-1 in Big Sky matches, 4-9-2 overall.
Thursday’s outcome was another frustrating one for Griz coach Mark Plakorus, who watched his team match, if not outplay, another Big Sky Conference opponent without the final result to prove it.
“We played well enough to win today. We did what we needed to do, we had our chances, and for the most part we controlled the game,” he said.
Montana took 15 shots and put seven on goal, but WSU sophomore goalkeeper Ryann Waldman stopped all seven, including a huge save on UM freshman Allie Simon in the 87th minute, to pick up her third shutout of the year.
Montana junior goalkeeper Kristen Hoon made three saves and the Griz had five overall until the Wildcats broke through.
Jessie Baddley took a shot early in the 82nd minute that was saved, but it resulted in a corner kick for Weber State.
Roxanne Tebbs put the ball in front of the Montana goal, and Woodhead was there with a header for her first goal of the season.
Junior Erin Craig also got a shot off in the closing minutes that was saved by Waldman.
Craig took a match-high six shots for Montana, putting three on goal. Sophomore India Watne and freshman Tyler Adair both took two shots.
“We’re playing great right now, but we need to start getting results out of how well we’re playing,” Plakorus said.
“We’ll keep our heads up and keep fighting and getting after it.”
Montana will go for its second Big Sky Conference victory of the season Saturday afternoon when the Grizzlies face Idaho State (4-9-1, 1-3-0 BSC) at Pocatello, Idaho. The match starts at 1 p.m.
The Bengals snapped a 10-match winless streak Thursday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Eastern Washington (1-11-0, 0-4-0 BSC).
