Wilhelm & Mendoza power rout of Adrian
ADRIAN, Michigan – Alexis Mendoza and Kurt Wilhelm each scored twice as the Heidelberg University men's soccer team routed Adrian College, 6-2, at Docking Stadium.
Adrian (0-1) took a lead in the 26th minute on a shot that got past sophomore goalkeeper Alex Archambeau, making his collegiate debut.
"Coming into another game 24 hours later to a team that was opening their season at home, it was great to see how we responded," said head coach Dr. Brian Haley. "Conditions were difficult with a turf field that played very fast."
After narrowly missing a few opportunities, Heidelberg (2-0) found the equalizer in the 32nd. Hamid Shariff possessed the ball in the penalty area and fed Mendoza. Mendoza's strike found the side netting.
Chris Koczak broke the tie with a goal 49 seconds into the second half. Koczak's goal came off of a pass from Ryan Homoki.
Less than five minutes later, Mendoza picked up his second goal of the match off a pass from Homoki.
With a 3-1 advantage, the Student Princes continued to press the Adrian defense. In the 73rd minute, Wilhelm struck with his first collegiate goal, assisted by Nico Samaniego.
Adrian's Nick Minshall closed the gap with his second goal of the game, which came against Matthew Stevens who entered at halftime.
Heidelberg scored twice in the game's final ten minutes as Wilhelm scored in the 87th minute and Kyle Simpson scored in the 89th minute. For Simpson, it was his first goal for the Tricolor. Andres Isea and Kyle Boone picked up the assists.
"It was great to see goals coming from all over the field," said Haley. "We moved the ball well and created chances which we put away in the second half."
Heidelberg controlled the pace of play throughout much of the match. The Student Princes levied 20 shots, compared to just five from the Bulldogs.
The six-goal outburst was the Heidelberg's biggest since a 6-0 win over Hiram in 2010.
It was the Student Princes' second win in Michigan in as many nights. On Friday, HU knocked off Albion, 2-0.
Haley's side will return to action for their home opener, Friday at 5 p.m. against Wittenberg. On Sunday, Heidelberg hosts Kenyon at 3 p.m.
