Newark, Del. - The William and Mary Tribe women’s soccer team ended the road portion of its regular season schedule with a tie on Sunday, earning a 1-1 draw at Delaware. With the tie, the Tribe’s record moves to 7-5-2 overall and to 3-2-1 in the CAA, while Delaware’s record goes to 5-7-1 overall and to 1-3-1 in conference play.

Leading the way for the Tribe was sophomore Erin Liberatore, who tallied the match-tying goal for the College in the second half thanks to an assist from senior Danielle Axenfeld. In goal, senior Grace Barnard made three saves on the afternoon.

For most of the first half, the match was a back and forth affair, with both teams getting good looks on goal. The match looked to be headed to a 0-0 score at the half, but in the 41st minute, Delaware’s Amy Pickard took a pass from Ali Miller and used her speed to get past the Tribe defenders, tallying a goal for the Blue Hens. At the half, UD would hold a 1-0 lead over the Tribe.

In the first 45 minutes, the Blue Hens would hold a small advantage over the Tribe in shots, 6-4, and held a 3-2 lead in shots on goal over the College. William and Mary had a pair of corner kicks in the first half, while UD had one.

In the second half, the Tribe’s offense came out with a renewed sense of urgency, looking for the equalizing goal. In the first 20 minutes of the second half, the College would out-shoot Delaware, 5-3.

In the 74th minute, the Tribe would find the equalizer it had been looking for. On the attack, Axenfeld found a sprinting Liberatore in the box. Liberatore finished well, putting a sliding toe-poke past the Blue Hen keeper, notching a score for the Tribe. Liberatore’s first goal of the season tied the match, 1-1, with just over 15 minutes left in regulation.

With the match now tied, both team would look for the winner, but neither team would be able to net another tally before the end of regulation. The Tribe would control possession for the rest of regulation, firing off seven shots, four of which would go on frame. Despite the chances, the match would head to overtime tied 1-1.

In the first overtime, both teams didn’t have many chances for goal, with the Blue Hens getting two shots, but neither was on goal. For the Tribe in the first OT, the College took one shot, but Liberatore’s chance was saved by the Blue Hen goalie. The match would head to the second overtime with the score still tied at 1-1.

In the second overtime, it would be Delaware that would get more looks for a match winner, taking three shots, none of which were on net. Junior Diana Weigel would take the Tribe’s only shot in the second overtime, but her shot would sail high. With neither team scoring in overtime, the match would end in a draw, 1-1.

Statistically, William and Mary dominated the Blue Hens on Sunday afternoon. The College out shot Delaware, 21-12, with the Green and Gold getting 10 shots on goal to UD’s four. W&M would also hold an advantage in corner kicks, 6-3.

The William and Mary Tribe women’s soccer team will return home to Williamsburg this week, playing its final five matches of the regular season at the friendly confines of Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. The College will host Hofstra on Friday, October 15 at 7 p.m.
