WILLIAMS TIES UD CAREER GOALS RECORD
KINGSTON, R.I. – Senior Colleen Williams collected her second career hat trick and had two assists to lead the University of Dayton women’s soccer team to a 7-2 victory over Rhode Island (7-5-1, 0-2-0 A-10) Sunday at URI Soccer Complex. The win keeps the Flyers (8-3-0, 2-0-0 A-10) unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play.
Williams tied UD’s all-time career goals record. She is tied with Karen Kazmaier (1985-87) for the most career goals by a Flyer. Williams also holds career records for points (149) and assists (45), as well as single-season record for assists (15 set in 2011).
Junior Steph Emery, sophomore Kelsey Smigel and freshmen Nicole Waters and Jasmine Whitaker each scored for the Flyers in the win over the Rams giving Dayton the distinction of having the most goals in a single game by an A-10 school this season.
Williams scored the first goal of the match in the 15th minute on a free kick by Sarah Senoyuit. Rhode Island tied it up in the 32nd minute on a goal off a free kick by Jennifer Barrientos.
Emery gave UD a 2-1 lead at the half after heading in a cross from Williams in the 37th minute.
Williams gave the Flyers the eventual game winner in the 49th minute on a cross from fellow senior Alysha Mallon.
Then, the Flyers scored three goals in a span of one minute and 31 seconds. Waters gave UD a 4-1 lead at the 72:06 mark on an assist from Williams. Williams scored just 42 seconds later to give Dayton a 5-1 lead. Smigel scored at the 73:37 mark on an assist from Waters.
Rhode Island scored a second goal in the 88th minute coming off the foot of Ari Stanton.
At the 89:26 mark Whitaker scored her first collegiate goal and Smigel was credited with the assist.
Junior Jordin Melchert (3 saves) and Katherine Boone (1 save) split time in goal. Melchert was credited with the win and improves to 7-1-0.
Dayton continues its four-game A-10 road swing at Butler on Friday, Oct. 5 and at Saint Louis on Sunday, Oct. 7.
