Winthrop Women's Soccer Falls On The Road At Western Carolina 4-0

CULLOWHEE, NC – The Winthrop women’s soccer team suffered a 4-0 defeat to the Western Carolina Catamounts on Sunday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
The Eagles fall to 2-4 overall, while the Catamounts improve to 4-1-1 on the season.
Western Carolina struck first in the 35th minute to take a 1-0 lead on Laura Greb’s second goal of the season. Greb gained possession on a long ball over the Winthrop defense and gave her a one-on-one opportunity against Eagle goalkeeper Sarah Schippers. Greb chipped her shot over Schippers’ head and into the net from 15 yards out.
The Catamounts increased their advantage to 2-0 in the 43rd minute when Christine Kaznowski netted her first goal of the season after a throw-in. Kaznowski got the ball outside the 18-yard box on the far side and dribbled the ball into the middle of the field. Her shot went over the head of the Schippers and into the top-right corner of the goal.
Western Carolina ended the opening stanza with an 8-1 lead in shots and 5-3 in corner kicks.
Kylene Babauta attempted the only shot for the Eagles in the first half, while Schippers had two saves. Greb took two shots for the Catamounts to lead them offensively.
Tara Budnick gave Western Carolina a 3-0 lead in the 51st minute with her first goal of the season on a corner kick from the far side by Madison Lee.
It became a 4-0 contest in favor of the Catamounts in the 79th minute on the first goal of the season by Katie Salmons. Her goal came after she received a pass at the top of the 18-yard box from Kayla Sedgley near side, where she took a quick shot and scored in the top-left corner of the net.
Western Carolina finished the match with a 16-4 lead in shots and 11-4 in corner kicks.
Krystyna Freda took a team-high two shots for Winthrop, and goalkeeper Kelsy Weavil came on in the second half and snagged four saves. Greb took five shots for the Catamounts, and goalie Katie Jacobs had two saves.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 17 as they will host the East Tennessee State Buccaneers at 7 p.m.
