September 17, 2011

ROCK HILL, SC – Tori Davis scored the game-winning goal in the 109th minute on a pass from Kylene Babauta as the Winthrop women’s soccer team defeated the East Tennessee State Buccaneers 2-1 in double-overtime on Saturday evening at Eagle Field.

The Eagles improve to 3-4 on the season, while the Buccaneers fall to 4-3 overall.

The win also marks the first victory for Winthrop in program history over East Tennessee State.

“It was a good performance by our team,” said head coach Spencer Smith. “I thought we played well tonight. We battled for ninety-plus minutes against a very, very good and well-coached team in ETSU. I thought we kept pressing on and went for the game-winning goal which was good to see. We continued to create chances as the match went on. I was proud of our performance and effort.”

Davis scored the game-winning goal from two-yards out just inside the near post after Babauta made a through pass on the far side past several Buccaneer defenders. It was Davis’s second goal of the season and first assist of the year from Babauta.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first in the 8th minute of play on Kelly Clark’s second goal of the season from eight-yards out. Her scoring opportunity came after Winthrop was awarded a free kick from 40-yards out. Ashley Herndon took the free kick and placed the ball into a crowd of players, where Clark headed the ball past East Tennessee State goalkeeper Caitlin Caughan into the right side of the net. The assist by Herndon was also her second of the season.

The Buccaneers responded to tie the contest at 1-1 in the 33rd minute on a goal by Jenna Caudle. Tessa Johnson made a long pass to Caudle on the far side of the field, where she took her shot from 15-yards out and put it over the head of Eagle goalie Sarah Schippers and into the left-side of the goal.

Krystyna Freda looked the give Winthrop the game-winner less than a minute into the first overtime period when she intercepted a pass near side and dribbled top the top of the 18-yard box. Her shot, however, would just miss over the top-right corner of the net.

East Tennessee State attempted 22 shots on the evening and 11 on-goal, but was only able to manufacture the one goal as Schippers snagged a career-high 10 saves. The Eagles took a total of 18 shots and eight on-goal, and led in corner kicks over the Buccaneers 5-4.

Freda took a team-high eight shots for Winthrop, which sets the school record for most shots attempted in a game by an Eagle player. Ramey Kerns led East Tennessee State with six shots, while Gaughan finished the match with six saves.

Winthrop will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 21 as it hosts the South Carolina State Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
