Wisconsin-Milwaukee women defeat Detroit
October 17, 2009
DETROIT, Mich. (Oct. 16, 2009) – Sophomore Sarah Hagen scored two goals and senior Kate Megna assisted on both to break the school record for assists in a season and lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s soccer team to a 2-0 over Detroit, Friday afternoon at Titan Field.
“(The game) had a weird feel about it,” Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. “I don’t know if it was the travel, but the game seemed lethargic. I thought we got two great goals in the first half. Kate served two beautiful serves and Apple did well to finish them.”
Hagen scored in her school-record eighth-straight game, including multiple goals for the fourth-straight contest, as the Panthers (8-5-3, 6-0 Horizon) won for the sixth-straight game. Megna, meanwhile, now has 13 assists this season, topping the previous standard of 12.
Junior Nicole Sperl started the first scoring play with a quick free kick down the sideline. Megna tracked the ball and sent a cross to the far post. Hagen came through the box on a diving header to finish from two yards out in the 28th minute.
Nine minutes later, senior Louise Vraney sent a short pass to Megna, who once again flung a cross through the box. Hagen held her feet this time, but still finished with her head to make it 2-0.
From that point on, the Panther defense did what it had to in maintaining the shutout. The Titans were limited to six shots on the game, with freshman keeper Jamie Forbes coming up with three saves for her seventh shutout of the season.
The defensive highlight of the afternoon came in the 63rd minute when Trina Kochanski had a breakaway opportunity. Forbes came off her line and made a one-handed save to keep the shutout intact.
Milwaukee generated 13 shots in the game, sending seven on goal and making Madeline Franko make five saves for UDM. While the Panthers scored just twice, they also had a handful of other chances. Midway through the second half, senior Erin Kreuser lofted a shot at the far post, which Franko was able to push wide.
Minutes later, Hagen flicked a ball through the midfield and sophomore Sammy Vovos was able to beat her defender to the ball and get a solid shot at the goal. Unfortunately, her shot went just wide for a goal kick.
At 6-0, the Panthers are in the driver’s seat in the Horizon League standings with two regular season games remaining. Pending Friday’s other league games, Butler and Wright State are tied for second at 3-1. Milwaukee hosts WSU Sunday in the home regular season finale. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
