Wolf Pack falls to No. 17 Pilots, 2-0
The University of Nevada soccer team ended a three-match road trip with a 2-0 loss to No. 17 Portland Friday night at Merlo field.
With the loss, Nevada drops to (1-3-2 MW) on the season, while Portland improves to (4-1-1 WCC). The Wolf Pack is 0-5 as a program against ranked opponents.
The Pilots got out to a fast start, taking a 1-0 lead over the Wolf Pack on a goal by Allison Wetherington one minute into the match. Eight minutes later, Portland forward Danica Evans collected a ball that was blocked by the Nevada defense and scored a goal to put the Pilots ahead 2-0. Wolf Pack defender Danielle Green had Nevada’s lone shot in the half, as her blast from the left wing sailed wide of the net in the 36th minute. Nevada ended the half with a corner kick that was cleared by the Portland defense.
Wolf Pack midfielder Chrisalyn Fonte’s shot on goal in the 84th minute was saved by the Pilots goalkeeper. Portland held on to win the match 2-0. The Pilots had 16 corner kicks to two for the Wolf Pack. Portland ended the match with 14 shots, while Nevada had three.
Nevada will return to Reno to host Sacramento State Sunday afternoon at the Moana Sports Complex. The event is free to the public. Fans are encouraged to bring canned goods to donate to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Kick-off is slated for 4 p.m.
