Wolf Pack ties Zags, 0-0
The University of Nevada soccer team closed out its non-conference slate of matches with a 0-0 tie Sunday afternoon at the Gonzaga Soccer Field.
With the tie, Nevada sits (2-4-3 MW) on the season, while Gonzaga is (3-3-1 WCC) overall. The Wolf Pack is 5-5-9 under Dr. Melissa Price in overtime matches. This is the third overtime match for the team this season, with all three ending in a draw.
“We came out with better energy and an improved mentality today,” head coach Dr. Melissa Price said. “We fought off Gonzaga, who did well to put us under pressure, especially in the final moments of overtime. We preserved the shutout and our goal is to open conference play at home with a renewed confidence in our attacking abilities and success in the final third.”
The Nevada defense was tested early in the match, as Gonzaga recorded nine shots in the first period. Wolf Pack freshman Brianna Bosson had Nevada’s lone attempt in the half, with a shot that was tipped over the crossbar by the Bulldogs goalkeeper Christie Tombari. The Wolf Pack defense held firm to keep the score 0-0 at halftime. Nevada attempted five corner kicks to three for Gonzaga.
The Wolf Pack offense found its rhythm in the second half, testing the Zags defense with seven shots. Gonzaga nearly went ahead in the 66th minute on a diving header by Ali Ohashi, but Nevada goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos came up with a diving save to keep the match even. The Zags had 12 shots in the second period. The two teams ended regulation knotted up at 0-0.
The first overtime period was evenly matched with both teams unable to attempt a shot. The Zags looked determined to pull ahead in the final overtime period, tallying eight shots to none for the Wolf Pack. Quintos and the Nevada defense responded well to the pressure as the team walked away with a 0-0 tie.
Nevada returns home to open Mountain West play Friday against Utah State. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Mackay Stadium.
