Women's Soccer Begins Season with 6-1 Win
DENVER, Colo.: Regis University’s women’s soccer team gave 306 fans quite a show for the first home game of the 2012 season. The Rangers posted six goals to the Mountaineers one to win the match held on the Regis Match Pitch.
Senior midfielder Marissa Davis put up two goals on the day while junior goalkeeper Ellen Augsburger kept the Mountaineers to one goal.
Davis’ first goal occurred in the third minute of the game. Junior CC Rinehart played it in to Davis from just outside the 18-yard box. The senior then chipped it in over the Mountaineer goalie.
Sophomore Kendal Kagawa came up big for the Rangers in the 39th minute of play. Kagawa shot the ball from out front of the goal through defenders and past the goalkeeper for the second Ranger goal in the first half.
The second half would prove even more fruitful for the Rangers as Davis started it with another goal. From the top left, she dribbled through defenders and into the middle of the field. At the top of the 18-yard box, she sent it to the bottom left of the goal.
The Rangers were not done however as the next ten minutes of the match saw three more Ranger goals. In the 62nd minute, senior Maddie Reeves passed the ball from the right out towards junior Meghan Stuart. Stuart sent the ball around the posts from the far right and into the goal for an outstanding fourth goal.
For the rest of the match, the scoring was left to the Ranger freshman. Sade Akindele served the ball into Kate Pellegrino from the right of the 18-yard box. Pellegrino, from 10 yards out, sent the ball through the posts for goal number five.
The last Ranger goal came in the 70th minute after Sidny Otto passed in to Akindele from the top left of the 18-yard box. Akindele took two dribbles before she finished the play with a nice goal past the goalkeeper.
In the 82nd minute, the Mountaineers would seek a small vengeance, putting up one goal by the foot of freshman forward Jessie Arellano.
The Rangers outshot the Mountaineers 23-2 in the match with the Rangers maintaining most of the possession throughout.
The next match will take place at home on Monday, September 3rd against Rollins College at 11:00 AM. A free pancake breakfast will be provided to any Ranger fans that show up at 10:30 AM.
