Women's Soccer Blanks Georgian Court, 1-0
Queens, N.Y. - The Queens College women’s soccer team is off to a torrid, 3-1 start to the season, with a 1-0 shutout of Georgian Court from the Knights soccer field on Sunday. The shutout was the third time this season the Knights have blanked an opponent, while they have outscored their opponents 4-2 so far.
The game started with QC playing strong defense. In fact, the Knights held the Lions to just three shots in the game, all of them coming in the first half. Knights goalie Mersina Onesto made only one save to earn her third clean sheet of the season.
Queens got the game’s only marker late in the first half. Lorena Russi got the ball at the top of the 18-yard box. She took two dribbles to her right and blasted a shot to the right of the goal keeper, into the upper corner of the net. The goal put QC up, 1-0.
In the second half, the Knights didn’t allow Georgian Court any shots. The defense played well and the Knights earned the 1-0 win. In the victory, QC outshot the Lions, 11-3 and took six corner kicks to Georgian Court’s three. Bridget Gleason took two shots in the win, while Nicolette Scrozzo took one.
The Queens College women’s soccer team returns to the pitch on Wednesday, September 18, when they face Southern New Hampshire. The game with the Penmen is slated for 4:00 PM.
