BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Freshman Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team scored her first collegiate goal to help the Wildcats defeat Youngstown State, 1-0, in Friday's season opener at the University of Vermont's Virtue Field.
The Wildcats improve to 1-0-0 on the season in the non-conference contest at the TD Bank Classic. The Penguins drop their first decision of the 2014 campaign.
Junior Kirsten O'Neil (Hampton, N.H.) and Murphy both took a total of five shots each throughout the game.
UNH posted a total of 17 shots with 12 on target. Sophomore goalkeeper Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) earned the win as she now holds a record of 1-0-0 on the season stopping two shots on target.
The last time the 'Cats earned a win in the first game of the season dates back to Aug. 24, 2012 in a 2-0 win over Fairfield University in the TD Bank Classic.
Murphy took a shot with 11 minutes, 43 seconds remaining in regulation as she was one-on one with the goalie and found the back of the goal past netminder Jackie Podolsky. The assist came way by Hannah Blondin (East Hampton, Conn.) who made a terrific pass to Murphy. The goal marks Murphy's first of her collegiate career.
At the half, it was a scoreless game between the Wildcats and Penguins.
UNH held its ground in the second half as Youngstown State pressed for an equalizer. However, it was not enough as the Wildcats earned their first win of the 2014 season.
The squad is back in action Sunday, Aug. 24 against Central Connecticut State with an 11 a.m. start.
