Women's Soccer Defeats #13 Colorado Mesa
Davis Nets Two in the Women's Soccer Victory over #13 Colorado Mesa
DENVER, Colo.: Ranger women's soccer has started to make a habit of upsetting top ranked, undefeated teams. Regis continued the trend today against nationally ranked #13 Colorado Mesa University, defeating the Mavericks 3-1.
The win advances the Rangers overall record to 7-2-1 and their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record to 5-0-1.
The Rangers came out with an agenda today, as they scored their first two goals within the first five minutes of the match. The first goal was scored after two freshmen, Sade Akindele and Sidny Otto connected to put the Rangers up with just over one minute gone on the clock.
From midfield, Akindele played the ball across the field to Otto at the 18 yard box. Otto beat the goal for a chance to score into the left side of the Maverick goal.
The next Ranger goal came in the fifth minute of the match when junior Rachel McMahon passed the ball to senior Marissa Davis. Davis bested two defenders and sent the ball through to the top left of the net.
The rest of the half remained scoreless, but just as fast-paced. Regis scored their final goal just after the second half began. Otto took the ball from the left side and crossed in to Davis at the right of the Maverick 18 who scored over the goalkeeper.
In a last effort, Mesa scored a goal in the 66th minute of play. Freshman Brianna Randall made an attempt on a shot that banked of the top of the crossbar and back into play. Maverick Renae McFadden took advantage of the fallen keeper, scoring to bring the score to 3-1.
Despite the goal, Randall made eight saves against Mesa. The Rangers outshot the Mavs 26-19, while putting 13 on goal.
