Women's Soccer Downed by SNHU, 2-1
Box Score
Manchester, NH – Earlier this afternoon, the women's soccer team took on the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University on the road in their first Northeast-10 Conference contest of the season. After a scoreless first, it was Adelphi who got on the board first in the 60th minute. However, the hosts fired right back to tie it in the 79th minute and then notched the game winner in the latter stages of the game to serve the Panthers their first loss, 2-1. Adelphi moves to 3-1, 0-1 NE-10 while SNHU advances to 3-1, 1-1 NE-10.
The Brown and Gold got off to a slow start, managing just two shots in the first half, one of which was on goal while their counterparts tested keeper Sam Whitney throughout, firing six shots, four on target.
SNHU's Kasey Morrison, Bethi Ledoux, and Morgan Branco combine for four shots, each of which were stopped by Whitney.
In the 60th minute, the silence was broken when Gronenthal sent a cross through the middle of the box to find Donna Liotine to connect on a low shot that found the lower left corner of the net for the game's first goal and her fifth of the season.
However, the Penmen kept pressure on, rattling off seven second half shots and evening the score in the 79th minute. Gabby Cappello managed to break through the Panther back line and capitalized on the breakaway opportunity to level the playing field at one goal apiece.
Less than 10 minutes later, deep in Panther territory, Ashley Jaskula picked up a loose ball in front of the net and sent in a low shot that hit her mark on the left side of the net for what proved to be the game winning goal.
Whitney made a season high six saves in the loss while her counterpart was credited with two. The Panthers were outshot 15-3 and were at a 1-0 disadvantage in corners.
The women's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, September 12 when then host the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University in a conference contest at 7pm. Keep up with the game by following the live stats or watch the action at www.aupanthers.tv.
