Women’s Soccer Drops 4-3 Decision Against St. Joseph Of Connecticut
The women's soccer dropped a 4-3 decision against St. Joseph of Connecticut in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Pierce Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
St. Joseph got on the board first when sophomore Patricia Nolan (Portland, Conn.) tallied an unassisted goal in the 31st minute. The Blue Jays added a second goal late in the half when sophomore Nicole Mendelson (Southbury, Conn.) bent in a corner kick at the 40:25 mark. SJC had a 7-2 advantage in shots for the half.
It was more of the same early in the second half when St. Joseph extended their lead to 3-0 when senior Krista Watts (Wolcott, Conn.) headed on a free kick from senior Stacey Rutledge (Meriden, Conn.).
Johnson & Wales then mounted a comeback and made the game 3-1 in the 62nd minute when senior Katlyn Gerrish (North Stonington, Conn.) lofted in a goal from near midfield. The Wildcats then made it a one goal game as senior Amanda Aguiar (Fall River, Mass.) fed a pass to fellow senior Berkeley Cecchini-Bond (Uncasville, Conn.) who slipped a shot into the right corner of the net at the 67:11 mark to trim the lead to 3-2. After JWU was whistled for a foul in the box in the 71st minute, Rutledge converted the ensuing penalty kick to extend the lead to 4-2. JWU once again rallied and an unassisted goal by Cecchini-Bond at the 75:30 mark cut the lead to just one goal. That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as St. Joseph held on for the 4-3 victory.
Sophomore Kara Collins (North Arlington, N.J.) made two saves in net for the Wildcats while senior Holly Mirabella (Seymour, Conn.) had six stops for St. Joseph of Connecticut.
With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 6-4-1, 5-1-1 in the GNAC while St. Joseph of Connecticut improves to 8-3 and 6-2 in conference play. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, October 8th when they host Norwich for a GNAC contest at 1:00 p.m.
