Women's Soccer Drops First Home Game, 1-2
The Central Connecticut women’s soccer team dropped their first home game of the season Sunday against the Providence Friars (3-2-1) with a final score of 2-1. Central sophomore Kerriann Welch scored the lone goal for the Blue Devils and was assisted by junior Allison Kelley. Central’s overall record drops to 1-3.
The Friars were the first to score in the match in the 26th minute when freshman Catherine Zimmerman netted the ball off of a corner kick assisted by senior Laura DiClimente.
Play continued for the rest of the half while the teams traded possessions until, with just under 30 seconds on the clock, Providence junior Amanda Webster drew out Central goalie Nikola Deiter, passed her on the right and put the ball into the net. The two teams entered the locker room with the Friars leading 2-0.
Just over midway through the second half, the Blue Devils put their first and only score on the board when Welch, assisted by Kelley, shot the ball from the right side into the left corner of the goal. The goal is Welch's second on the season.
Welch led the Blue Devils with two shots and one goal followed by junior Jewel Robinson who also posted two shots. Kelley posted one shot in addition to her assist along with sophomore Julie Lavoie and senior Erin Egan.
Central will host the University of Connecticut Huskies (2-2-1) on Sunday, Sept. 9 at the CCSU Soccer Field at 1 p.m.
