Women’s Soccer Drops Last Road Contest
Smithfield, RI – Despite a gritty first half performance that saw multiple scoring opportunities, the Wagner College women's soccer team fell to Northeast Conference (NEC) opponent Bryant by a score of 2-0 on Friday afternoon in its last road contest of the season.
With the loss, Wagner drops to 3-11-3 on the year and 0-6-1 on the year, while the Bulldogs improve to 5-3 in conference play and 11-4-2 on the season.
In the first half, the Seahawks nicely pressured the Bulldogs deep in Bryant territory, gaining multiple scoring chances in the process. An early shot by sophomore Autumn Clark (Fort Lauderdale, FL / Pine Crest Prep) missed its mark, while an attempt by sophomore Maria Nunez (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) 20 minutes into the first half was turned away by the Bryant goalkeeper.
In the second period, the Seahawks had their best scoring opportunities on shots by junior Kristen Bischoff (Massapequa, NY / Massapequa), who led the Green and White with three attempts, but could not capitalize. The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Remi Manna and doubled their lead on a goal by Amanda Spitaleri.
Defensively, sophomore Delaney Beck (Bakersfield, CA / Garces Memorial) made six saves in goal before being sent off with a red card 65 minutes into the contest, while junior Katie Viscardi (Hazlet, NJ / Mater Dei Prep) made one save in relief of Beck.
Next up, Wagner will honor its three seniors, goalie Kaitlin Flaherty (Southfield, MI / Wylie Groves), along with defenders Jessica Donnelly (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan), and Amanda Buck (Bay Shore, NY / Islip), in a ceremony prior to Sunday's Noon Northeast Conference (NEC) regular season finale at Hameline Field.
