Women's Soccer Drops Opener to Post, 1-0
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - One year ago, Queens and Post met in the final game of the Mercy Kickoff Classic and the Knights triumphed, 1-0. This year, the season-opener went to the Eagles, 1-0, in the opening round game of the 2014 Mercy Kickoff Classic from Dobbs Ferry, New York. The Knights are 0-1 on the season.
The sweltering heat affected both sides early on as neither side could muster much offensive attack. After a much needed respite was called by the referee, Post went on the offensive. In the 32nd minute, Lexxi Carroll had the ball in the right side of the QC box. She blasted a shot that was headed for net, butItzel Guzman stepped in front of the blast and deflected it to safety. Guzman's sacrificing of her body to make the stop kept the game scoreless at the half.
In the second half, Post scored just past the hour mark when Renel Dennis lifted a ball that found Katharina Mertz who scored. Despite the goal allowed, Knights' keeper, Mersina Onesto, made a save in the game as well. Queens never threatened again and the Eagles held on for a 1-0 win. The team concludes play in the Mercy Kickoff Classic on Saturday, when they face Pace University.
Nicolette Scrozzo had both of QC's shots in the game. Also, the game marked the first collegaite appearance for several new Knights; including: Haley Gibbons, Courtney Locurcio, Alexis Qualle, Taylor Bonanno, Erin Vernillo,Deanna Hagen and Karysa Pikoulas.
