Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener
ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's soccer team opened the 2011 season with a 2-1 loss to Penn State-Behrend in the openeing game of the 2011 Rachel Miller Memorial Classic. Sophomore Rachael Bromson (Suffield, CT/Suffield) scored the Tigers lone goal as RIT out shot the Lions 14-3.
The Lions struck first on a goal by Lindsey Steinsdorfer off an assist from Erin McReary in the 29th minute.
RIT had a great chance lateg in the first half when freshman Jaimie Lewandowski (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) broke around her defender. She fired a shot one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but hit the shot just wide of the net.
RIT had a great chance to equalize early in the second half. Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) played a ball into the penalty area that Bromson ran onto but the PSU-Behrend goalkeeper dove on the ball just before Bromson could get a shot off.
Glennis Robash gave the Lions a 2-0 lead in the 77th minute when she split three RIT defenders and broke in on RIT goalkeeper Alyssa Henkel (Newark, NY/Newark) beating her with a low shot into the right corner.
The Tigers pulled to within a goal with just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation off a free kick. Lewandowski served a perfect ball from the top of the penalty area. Bromson ran onto and headed a ball right into the lower right corner for her first goal in a Tigers uniform.
RIT had a couple other chances late in regulation but were unable to convert.
Henkel took the loss in net for the Tigers allowing two goals. Heather Klimuszka picked up the win for Penn State-Behrend allowing one goal and making 10 saves.
RIT will face SUNY Oneonta on Saturday at 1 pm, while Penn State-Behrend will play Union at 3:30 pm in the second day of the Rachel Miller Classic.
