Women's Soccer Falls 2-0 to #3 St. Rose
Albany, N.Y. – The women's soccer team took on the #3 Golden Knights of St. Rose at Sullivan Stadium on the campus of St. Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. A pair of goals evenly split between the two halves by the host proved to be just enough to get the job done as Adelphi would be unable to respond and fall 2-0. With the loss, the Panther slip to 4-2-1, 1-2-1 NE-10 while the Golden Knights advance to 5-0-1, 3-0-1 NE-10.
From the opening whistle, St. Rose came out and played aggressive soccer; and it paid off. On just the second shot of the game in the 9th minute, Sydney Bond notched the first goal of the contest and her fifth of the season. The play was set up by Gianna Smith sending a pass over to Bond who one-touched it in to the left side of the net, giving her team the early 1-0 lead.
Emily Masiello tried to respond in the 13th minute, but her after creating some space deep in St. Rose territory, the threat was squashed by a Jessica Gerski save. She accounted for the only other shot in the half in the 41st minute, but was met with the same result. Keeper Sam Whitney was kept busy, saving three of St. Rose's nine shots in the first 45 minutes.
In a similar situation, just 2:44 into the second, Kristin Carr picked up a loose ball and fired a shot from 15 yards out on the left side to find the back of the net, placing Adelphi in a 2-0 hole.
Looking to get one back, senior Kaitlin Monteith set up a free kick opportunity from 20 yards out, but her attempt sailed just high off the mark. Just ten minutes later, Masiello tried her luck again after the defense of St. Rose failed to clear the ball, but was stopped by Gerski. Sarah Cote had the last opportunity to find the back of the net, but had a similar fate as her teammates.
Whitney was tested throughout the night and among her eight stops, made numerous athletic saves while her counterpart was credited with four.
The Panthers were out-shot 17-5 and were at a 10-4 disadvantage in corner attempts.
Adelphi is back in action on Saturday, September 22 when they hit the road for a conference contest against the Purple Knights of St. Rose. First kick is scheduled for a 1pm start. Live Stats can be found here.
