KENNESAW, Ga. – Opening the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference schedule, the Lipscomb women’s soccer fell 2-1 to Kennesaw State Friday.
The Owls (4-5-0, 1-0-0 A-Sun) scored the game-winning goal in the 61st minute on a corner kick. Through several chances, the Lady Bisons were unable to score the equalizer.
“Quite honestly, it was a great game tonight,” Lipscomb head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “There were a lot of great chances. Unfortunately for us, we lost on two set piece goals.
“That is something that we have been working on, trying to improve on.”
Kennesaw State got on the scoreboard first in the 18th minute as Shannon Driscoll headed a ball off a corner kick from Jewelia Strickland.
The Lady Bisons scored the equalizer just nine minutes later as sophomore forward Caroline Chadwell knocked her shot into the lower right corner of the goal for her second goal of the year. Freshman Ellen Lundy assisted on the play, sending the ball through the defense to Chadwell, setting up the shot.
The assist gave Lundy her 21st point this year, which ranks her first in the A-Sun.
The game-winner for KSU came on another header in the box off a corner kick. Strickland again placed the ball but this time it was Nicole Calder who headed the ball into the net.
“She is a great player,” O’Brien said of Calder. “She was very aggressive in the air.”
Freshman goalkeeper Anna Buhigas had three saves for the Lady Bisons.
The Lady Bisons had nine chances on goal but were unable to get any other goals in against Olivia Sturdivant, the KSU goalkeeper.
The Purple and Gold looks to rebound Sunday at Mercer with a noon kickoff.
“For us, it is a matter of moving past it and taking the positives,” O’Brien said. “We played some great soccer. We’ll recover tomorrow and ultimately put out a great performance against Mercer.”
