Women’s Soccer Falls At NAU

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (9/1/2017) -- An early second-half goal was the difference as the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team was upended, 1-0, at Northern Arizona on Friday night.
The game is part of the NAU Mountain Classic, which also features Grand Canyon and Nevada, and was televised live on FOX Sports Detroit Plus.
Northern Arizona (3-1-0) scored the goal in the 55th minute as the Titan defense did its best to keep the Lumberjacks off the scoreboard despite a 21-6 shooting margin.
Junior Marina Manzo made nine saves in net, while senior Rachel DeLuca led the offense with two shots on goal.
Detroit Mercy (2-2-1) will be back in action on Sunday as the red, white and blue meet Grand Canyon at Lumberjack Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m. (EST).

First Half
- Northern Arizona pressured the Titan defense throughout the first half recording eight shots in the period, but Manzo came up with five saves.
- NAU was awarded a corner kick just four minutes into the game and that is when Manzo came up with her first save.
- Freshman Kelli Doyle had a look at the 12-minute mark, but it was saved as was senior Phylisha Drayton's attempt at 42:30.
- The biggest threat from the Lumberjacks came with less than a minute to go in the half as Manzo dove to her left to knock a sure goal away.
Second Half
- NAU came out firing with nine shots in the first 25 minutes of the stanza.
- The Lumberjacks earned another corner kick at 52:44, but Manzo turned that away for her sixth save of the game.
- The Titans then saw NAU break through at 55:12 as Detroit Mercy could not clear a ball in front of the net and the Lumberjacks were able to take advantage.
- The Titans almost tied the game as DeLuca fired a shot that just tipped the crossbar at 77:26.
Notes
- It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
- Detroit Mercy is making just its second appearance in the state of Arizona as it last played in the Grand Canyon state in 2002, when the Titans faced Cal Poly and Drake in Arizona's Wildcat Invitational.
- Detroit Mercy has been outshot in four of their five games.
- Manzo now has six games with eight or more saves in her career.
