Women’s Soccer Falls at No. 22 Duke, 3-1
DURHAM, N.C. – A multi-goal night for Duke’s Ashton Miller propelled the No. 22 Blue Devils to a 3-1 victory over the Pitt women’s soccer team (10-5-1, 4-4-0 ACC) on Thursday night at Koskinen Stadium.
“We didn’t do a good enough job of communicating or switching, so it allowed Duke to create space in the middle of the field and just run at us,” said head coach Greg Miller. “I’m really pleased with our effort and the fact that we created wonderful goal scoring chances. We feel good about what we set up, but we’re disappointed that we’re still unable to finish those chances to give ourselves a lead or put ourselves back in the game. I’m just glad that we’re imposing ourselves on teams more than we have in the past.”
Junior Taylor Francis made her 40th consecutive start in goal for the Panthers. The Cary, N.C., native matched her season high saves total with 10 for the first time since Aug. 30 at Colorado College.
Pitt put eight of 14 shots on frame, but were ultimately outpaced by Duke (9-4-4, 3-2-3 ACC) in total offensive chances as the Blue Devils recorded 22 shots, 13 on goal.
Freshman Sarah Krause struck first for the Panthers, netting the game’s first goal in the 24th minute. Sophomore Taylor Pryce dialed up a try inside the 18-yard box, saved by Duke’s EJ Proctor. Krause never gave up on the play, finishing her run around six yards from the left side of the goal to send in the score off the rebound unimpeded.
Duke reversed the scales around the 30th minute on goals from Imani Dorsey and Ashton Miller only a minute and a half apart. Miller assisted Dorsey’s score.
Behind the efforts of standout redshirt freshman defender Seyla Perez, the Panthers’ defense played a stingy second period. But Miller would be heard from again, collecting her fifth point of the night after controlling a rebound to find net from nine yards out in the 82nd minute.
Pitt will travel to No. 7 Virginia Tech this Sunday, Oct. 25, for a 1 p.m. matchup at Thompson Field as the team looks for its second win over a top 10 opponent in program history.
