Women’s Soccer Falls Short In America East Opener at UNH, 2-1
Savage tallies first goal of the year
DURHAM, N.H. – UMBC women’s soccer’s junior midfielder Amy Savage (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Wilfrid Laurier) notched her first goal of the season, but it was New Hampshire’s second-half penalty kick that broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Wildcats a 2-1 victory in Sunday afternoon’s America East opener at Lewis Fields.
UNH (3-6-1) has won seven of its last eight meetings against the Retrievers and move to 3-6-1 (1-0 America East) on the season, while UMBC falls to 1-7-2 (0-1 America East) on the year.
The Wildcats jumped out in front 9:07 into the first half, as freshman midfielder Gabrielle Sloan played a ball to junior midfielder Kristi Zarrilli, and Zarrilli found sophomore forward Meghan Ledwith who beat UMBC keeper Lauren Kadete (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) into the lower right corner for her second goal of the season.
The Retrievers looked to even up the contest and nearly did so at the 63:25 into the contest when senior forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) blasted a shot, that was denied by the crossbar.
UMBC did find the back of the net 4:02 later as Savage put away one of her game-high five shots on the afternoon on a header from a McKee corner kick, evening the score at 1-1.
The Wildcats broke the tie less than a minute later as freshman midfielder Kirstyn Corder, the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, converted on a penalty kick to give UNH the 2-1 victory.
Kadet finished the afternoon with seven saves, moving her into third place all-time at UMBC in career saves with 268. She surpasses Christy Friedrich (267). McKee also moved up in the Retrievers’ record book, moving into a tie for seventh with Nicole Grinspoon in career shots (119).
The Retrievers continue league play on Thursday when they travel to take to Hartford.
