Women's Soccer Falls to FGCU, 3-0, on Senior Day
KENNESAW, Ga. – Three different players found the back of the net for the Eagles as Florida Gulf Coast defeated the Kennesaw State women’s soccer team, 3-0, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day in from of 717 fans at KSU Soccer Stadium.
The loss drops the Owls to 6-7-1 (2-4-0 A-Sun) for the season, while the win improves the Eagles to 9-3-2 (4-0-1 A-Sun) on the year.
The two teams played a scoreless first half until the 42nd minute when Brittany Burt assisted on Olivia Elias’ go-ahead goal. Burt sent a cross into the box that Elias buried at the far post to give Florida Gulf Coast a 1-0 lead.
Burt also set up both of the Eagles’ goals in the second half. FGCU got a goal from Gina Petracco in the 53rd minute, and Ashley Giesielczyk capped off Florida Gulf Coast’s scoring in the 59th minute.
Kennesaw State junior goalkeeper Melissa Hutto registered a season-high 10 saves in the losing effort. The 10 saves also matches the Pensacola, Fla. native’s career-high which she set in the Owls 2-1 loss to Wyoming last season.
“Disappointing day for our seniors,” head coach Rob King said. “We’re struggling with injuries but we have to find a way to put two consecutive performances together. Gulf Coast beat us to the ball for 90 minutes. We will regroup and be ready for Mercer on Friday.”
The Black and Gold were outshot 20-4 in the match, while redshirt-freshman Katrina Frost had a team-high three shots in the loss.
The match also represented the final regular-season home match for the 2011 senior class of Shelby Cosby, Alyssa Mahan, Kristin Marietta, Lauren Ruffini, Katie Schwartz, Katie Scott and Brittany Vining.
The Owls will play its final three games of its 2011 season on the road starting with a short trip down I-75 to take on Mercer on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.
