Women’s Soccer Falls To Northwestern, 3-0
Despite holding the Wildcats to a scoreless first half, Loyola fell to Northwestern 3-0 Wednesday night at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. With the loss, the Ramblers fall to 3-4-1 on the season while Northwestern picks up its first win of 2011 to improve to 1-6-0.
The Rambler defense was forced to protect its goal for the majority of the match while the offense struggled to create scoring opportunities. The combination of Jessie Hubly, Valeria Gonyo, Tessa Daniels, and Moriah Schwarz accumulated four blocks to help Katie Groesch in goal prevent early goals from Northwestern.
Caroline Dagley put the Wildcats on the board and in the lead at the 51:17 mark in the second half. After an assist from Kate Allen, Dagley rocketed a bullet from 15 yards out to the upper right corner of the net. Nearly 20 minutes later, Dagley tallied an assist when she sent a cross into the box and connected with Jill Dunn for a header goal.
Midway through the second half, Loyola crashed the net, taking three shots in a period of five minutes, in hopes of comeback but came up short.
Allen scored her fourth goal of the season off of an assist from Sami Schrakamp with less than nine minutes left in the match to bring the final score to 3-0.
Northwestern finished with a 19-5 edge in shots and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Newcomers Allison Rydberg and Gonyo took shots in the match, along with Alex Brown, Tricia Stonebraker, and Hubly. Groesch earned the start at goalkeeper and dropped to 0-3-1 with the loss after making seven saves against the Wildcats.
Loyola will be back in action on Sunday when it faces Northern Illinois on the road at 1:00 p.m. CST.
