Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. – Earlier this afternoon, the Adelphi University women's soccer team closed out the regular season at home against Stonehill College on senior day. Both teams played to a scoreless tie in regulation, but the Skyhawks scored first in overtime to take the win 1-0. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 9-6-3 overall and 6-6-3 in the NE-10 while the Skyhawks improve to 6-5-6 overall and 5-5-5 in the conference.
The first half was played evenly, with both teams holding equal possession of the ball. Both teams took three shots with Kaitlin Monteith, Donna Liotine and Taylor Groth all making attempts for the Panthers with no success.
The second half was a much different story as both teams battled for control from the get-go. In the opening seconds of the second half, Maddie Manning took an open shot for the visitors, but it deflected off the crossbar and right to Sam Whitney. Both teams continued to fight for possession throughout the duration of the second half, and both teams had many more chances to score.
The Panthers first real scoring chance in regulation came in the 73rd minute as Emily Masiello ripped a shot that seemed to be headed for the back of the Skyhawks net, but was met by a diving save from Amy Wheaton. Moments later, Alison Gronenthal also took a shot for the Panthers, but she too was stopped by a diving Wheaton.
Adelphi challenged again in the 81st minute as Gronenthal took the ball up from the middle towards a one-on-one showdown with the Stonehill keeper, but was met stopped by an athletic save. Seconds later, Aimee Goldstein looked to try and get a shot into the back of the net, but missed wide left. Gronenthal tried her luck with a header in the 86th minute, but missed wide right.
The missed opportunities would prove costly for the Panthers as Stonehill took the initiative in the 93rd minute off of a corner kick by Caroline Stone. Christine Moodle scored the game-winner for the visitors off of an assist from Maddie Manning.
The Panthers outshot the visitors 14-10 and the teams tied with three shots on goal each. The Panthers held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Sam Whitney made two saves in the loss, while her counterpart Wheaton made three.
The Panthers secure the #8 seed in the Northeast-10 Tournament and will take on the top seeded and national #10 ranked Yellow Jackets of American International College in the quarterfinal round on Monday, October 29 at 4pm in Springfield, MA.
