Women's Soccer Handles Allegheny, 3-0
ROCHESTER – The Nazareth women's soccer squad had a strong start to the 2016 season, downing visiting Allegheny 3-0 on Friday night at Golden Flyer Stadium. Nazareth poured in two first half goals and added an insurance goal in the second half.
With the win, Nazareth improves to 1-0 on the year, while Allegheny falls to 0-1.
Jessica Byrnes scored Nazareth's first goal of the season in the 18thminute. Senior Michaela Soules threaded a pass to Byrnes at the center of 18-yard box, before taking a turn and firing a shot into the corner.
In the 32nd minute, Monroe Community College transfer Samantha Sansone found the back of the net. Soules picked up her second assist of the game after her initial shot caromed off the crossbar, onto the foot of Sansone.
Nazareth held a 2-0 lead at the break.
The Golden Flyers attack needed just 16 seconds in the second half to score again. Laura Herman sent a diagonal pass to Mary Kate Ordway for a blast over the goalkeepers head. It was Ordway's first career goal.
The Gators best scoring chance came in the 53rd minute, as Kayla Dantona pushed a shot from 10-yards out just wide of the bar, however, that is as close as they would come.
Allison Dobles finished the game with two saves to earn the win in net.
Nazareth held a 19-5 advantage in shots for the game.
The Golden Flyers return to action on Saturday when they host Mount Saint Mary (NY) at 4 p.m.
