Women's Soccer Handles Hawks, 3-1
Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's soccer team welcomed St. Anselm onto Motamed Field on Saturday, October 13 for a Northeast-10 contest. The Panthers were the aggressors from the first whistle, out shooting the Hawks, 17-8 on the way to a 3-1 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 8-4-2 overall and 5-4-2 in the NE-10, while St. Anselm falls to 3-7-3 overall and 2-6-3 in NE-10 play.
Adelphi got on the board in the fifth minute when Alison Gronenthal sent a ball toward the right corner of the Hawk net, but was turned away by a St. Anselm defender. The ball popped out to Amanda Reverberi who pushed the ball back into the same spot and found the back of the net, giving the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.
The Brown and Gold broke through again in the 27th minute when Sarah Cote picked up a ball in the midfield and slide a beautiful thru ball to Emily Masiello. Masiello collected the ball and used her left foot to beat Hawk goalkeeper Gabriella Primera and give Adelphi a 2-0 cushion.
However, that advantage was short lived as the Hawks bounced back in the 30 th minute of action when Kim Schubert directed the ball to Kaitlin Oldfield near the Adelphi 18 yard box. Sam Whitney was charging out of the Panther net to challenge when Oldfield chipped the ball over Whitney's head and into the back of the Adelphi goal, pulling the Hawks to within one, 2-1, which is how the half would end.
After pressuring the Hawks in the early moments of the second half, Adelphi's insurance goal came in the 63rd minute off the head of Taylor Groth. Donna Liotine sent an arcing corner kick toward the far post of the St. Anselm goal where it found the head of Groth, who knocked it into the back of the goal, 3-1 Panthers.
From there the Adelphi defense took over, stifling the Hawk attack and securing the 3-1 victory. Whitney was credited with her eighth win of the year, making four stops, while Primera made six saves in defeat. Adelphi out shot the Hawks, 17-8 and held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Panthers return to the pitch on Tuesday, October 16 when they host St. Anselm at 4:00 pm on Motamed Field.
