Women’s soccer holds on to draw with A-Sun f
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s soccer team battled to a second-straight tie Sunday afternoon at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
This time, the 1-1 tie came against the Atlantic Sun Conference defending champions and preseason favorites, Florida Gulf Coast.
“There are different kinds of ties,” Lipscomb head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “Friday night I felt like we should have won the game, leading late and having some great chances. Today, the tie is a moral victory.
“We dug in and defended against one of the best teams in the league and the region.”
The Lady Bisons (4-5-4, 1-1-2 A-Sun) jumped on the scoreboard in the 13th minute on junior Baylee Linnell’s sixth goal of the season. Freshman Alesondra Colbert fed the ball to Linnell who made a sweeping shot from the right side of the goal into the bottom left corner.
The Eagles answered back just three minutes later as Tabitha Tindell made a long arcing pass from the right corner of the field to Julia Roddar, who one touched the ball into the net.
Both teams had their chances to take the lead but neither could get another shot past the goalkeepers. Freshman Anna Buhigas has 10 saves for the Lady Bisons, increasing her league-leading total to 72.
Brittany Brown had one save for the Eagles while several Lipscomb shots bounced off the posts.
Although all the scoring took place in the first 16 minutes of play, O’Brien was pleased with the play of his squad in the second stanza.
“We really played great, especially in the second half. It wasn’t until the overtime period that Florida Gulf Coast really took over. The way we played was fantastic, they competed for each other.”
FGCU has been the benchmark for the A-Sun the last four years, posting a record of 25-2-5 and winning three-straight A-Sun titles. The Lady Bisons previously tied FGCU in 2008, also a 1-1 game.
Lipscomb travels to Jacksonville, Fla., next weekend facing JU at 6 p.m. on Friday and North Florida at noon on Sunday.
