Women's soccer loses to No. 2 William Smith
ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's soccer team was defeated by No. 2 William Smith College 1-0 in Liberty League action from a sunny RIT Field. The loss drops the Tigers to 4-7-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the Liberty League.
The Herons improve to 10-0-1 on the season and are 4-0-0 in the Liberty League. The first half saw very few scoring chances for either team. William Smith had four total shots, but only one on net. RIT did not get a shot off in the first half.
The Herons had the lone scoring chance in the first half coming nine minutes into the contest. Kate Redmond took a hard shot from 12 yards out that rang off the post and went clear of the net.
Whitney Frary had the second half's first scoring chance just 1:30 in with a volley from just outside the top of the box that just missed the cross bar.
The Tigers first good scoring chance came seven minutes into the second half on a nice build-up by the Tigers. Kimi Sisti (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had the ball and drive down the left flank, but she could not turn the corner and make the cross as the Herons defender poked the ball free.
The Herons struck for the game's lone goal in the 53rd minute. Dineo Mmutla scored off an assist from Redmond. She drove down the right flank and fired a low cross that Mmutla ran onto and tipped into the low left corner giving the Heron's a 1-0 lead.
RIT's best scoring chance came with 12 minutes to play in regulation. Freshman Katie Schindler (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) played a ball to fellow first year Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) out on the wing. She drove down and flicked a cross into the box that Rachael Bromson (Suffield, CT/Suffield) ran onto and fired a half volley on net. Amanda Davis was able to steer the shot wide and Kiss's rebound shot was blocked out of harms way.
William Smith held a 14-3 edge in shots and had four corner kicks to just one for the Tigers. Davis picked up the win for the Herons allowing no goals and maiking one save. Senior Ashley Valenti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) took the loss allowing just one goal and making four saves.
The Tigers hit the road for a conference game at Clarkson University on Saturday, October 8 at 1 pm in Potsdam, New York.
