Women's Soccer Opens Season with Defeat of Geneva
The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women’s soccer team netted a pair of second-half goals to upend Geneva 2-0 Saturday afternoon in the team’s season opener.
The first half saw neither team score despite both squads having opportunities. Pitt-Bradford’s Alex Snellbaker appeared to score a goal 15 minutes into the game but she was ruled offside.
In the 67th minute, the Panthers lined up for one of their nine corner kicks on the afternoon. Yvonne Rohan placed a perfect ball into the box and Linsey Stack converted with a header inside the far post to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Less than 12 minutes later, Andrea Gundlach fired a long pass up the far sideline that Lindsay Sherman tracked down, and the senior forward’s shot from the left side of the box found the back of the net to push the lead to 2-0. The defense would preserve the shutout from there.
Pitt-Bradford outshot Geneva 10-4 and goalkeeper Alisa Cornell recorded one save.
“Overall I was pleased with the collective effort from our team today,” said head coach Mike Idland. “I thought we stayed pretty well organized and positive even after missing close chances and having a goal disallowed.
We have plenty of kinks to work out and need to become much smoother transitioning to attack but it’s a good start for us and we’ll keep working to improve those areas.”
The Panthers travel to Chatham tomorrow for a 5 p.m. contest.
