Women’s Soccer Scoring Blitz Bests Bristol
FALL RIVER, Mass. ---- For the third straight game freshman Kayla Gomes (Halifax) found the back of the net as the Massasoit women’s soccer team topped Bristol CC, 6-0, on the road, Thursday. The win marked the first of the season for the Warriors.
Gomes finished with two goals and two assists to lead the Massasoit (1-2) offense to victory. Also pitching in with goals included Stephanie Villanueva (Whitman), Shauna Fitzpatrick (Whitman), Gina Nutting (Rockland) and Zhandali Fontes (Taunton).
Massasoit led 5-0 at the half, as the Warriors netted all the first-half goals in the first 35 minutes of action.
“We really possessed the ball well today. We possessed better than we have in any game this year,” head coach Jim Stapleton said. “We also did a much better job passing and controlling the game. We had some great crosses and through balls to set up our goals.”
Laura Ellis (Raynham) made two saves in goal to pick up her first career shutout.
“Defensively, both Haley Wells (Whitman) and Shauna Fitzpatrick (Whitman) did a great job for us and Laura was solid in goal,” Stapleton said. “Our defense really limited Bristol’s chances to score.”
WHY MASSASOIT WON: The Warriors put the pressure on Bristol early, scoring four goals in the first 26 minutes of action. Massasoit was able to possess the ball, primarily in the opponent’s half of the field. In total, the Warriors fired 28 shots to just seven by the home squad.
MORE GOALS FOR GOMES: Kayla Gomes netted her third and fourth goals of the season, posting the first multi-goal performance by a Warrior this season. In addition she dished out two assists to give her a team-best 10 points on the season.
FIRST WIN FOR STAPLETON: Jim Stapleton earned his first victory guiding the Massasoit women’s soccer team in the 6-0 victory vs. Bristol. Stapleton, who also coaches the men’s basketball program at Massasoit, has 202 wins in 12 seasons on the hardwood.
NEXT UP: Massasoit hosts the Monroe College JV team on Sunday at 2 p.m. on Warrior Field.
