ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's women's soccer team scored an impressive 7-0 win over Spalding (Ky.) in the home opener Saturday at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance.
The Purple Raiders are off to a 2-0 start to the season and have back-to-back wins for the first time since September 2008. Goals came early and often in the first period as the Raiders first two scores came over a span of 23 seconds in the 11th minute.
Gina Wall (Warren/Howland) made a defender miss 18 yards out then beat the keeper to put Mount Union on the board then on the ensuing restart Kylee Kolesar (Mentor/Mentor) fed Ashley Kuhn (North Olmsted/North Olmsted) for a score and a 2-0 lead.
Mount Union put two more quick ones on the board about midway through the period in a span of 1:03 as Jackie Lowdermilk (Wadsworth/Wadsworth) scored off a pass from Allison Fouss (Lowell/Marietta) in the 21st minute then Alyssa Flitcraft (Alliance/Marlington) knocked in a rebound to make it 4-0.
Five minutes later, Kolesar made a defender miss then went to the far post in the 26th minute as Mount Union took a 5-0 lead into the lockers.
Kolesar then scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 60th minute off an assist from Wall to extend the lead to 6-0.
Flitcraft then got her second score of the day in the 74th minute to finish the scoring.
Jackie Podolsky (Canfield/Canfield) and Taryn Vespoint (Ravenna/Ravenna) combined for the shutout as Mount Union dominated play and out-shot Spalding, 38-3.
The Raiders return to action Sunday at 2 pm when they host Hilbert (N.Y.) at 2 pm at Mount Union Stadium.
