Women's Soccer Starts Strong With a 5-1 Win
Garden City, N.Y. – The women's soccer team opened up their 2013 campaign in style this evening as they trounced non-conference Chestnut Hill College by a score of 5-1. The Panthers had scoring from four different players while a total of nine registered at least one point in the lopsided win.
"I think it was an important win for the girls" stated third year Head Coach, Chris Armas. "It validates all the hard work we put in in the off season and is good for entire group as we move into a difficult stretch coming up."
The Brown and Gold wasted no time as their offense took control of the game from the opening whistle and pressed hard on Chestnut Hill keeper, Samantha Pauls. 14 first half shots were equally as impressive as the defense holding the opposition to just a single attempt which was not on target.
Highlighting the first half was the duo of Michelle Brown and Olivia Czavar. In the 14th minute, Czavar, from the right side, found Brown in the center and beat Pauls to net the Panther's first goal of the 2013 season and give her team the early 1-0 lead.
Despite the many attempts, the Griffins managed to keep it 1-0 until the 56th minute when they let up the second score of the game courtesy of Kelsey Simpson on an Aimee Goldstein assist.
Katherine Williams responded for the hosts less than nine minutes later to make it a 2-1 game, but the flood gates opened shortly after. At the 71st minute mark, Taylor Salmon , from about 30 yards out, found the back of the net on a feed from Melissa Rubin to make it 3-1. Adelphi unleashed another two quick goals within two minutes of each other. In the 81st, Victoria Antonino netted her first of two while Goldstein earned her second assist of the game.
Capping off the route was Antonino once again on a double assist from Donna Liotine and Bianca Lastra.
The Panthers dominated on both ends of the field, outshooting the Griffins 32-7 and having more corner attempts, 12-4. Whitney earned her 19th career victory with a two-save performance.
The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, September 11 when they travel to Flushing, Queens to take on the Queens College Knights of the East Coast Conference at 4pm
