Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's soccer team will embark on its first road trip of the 2018 campaign as the Seahawks travel to Fairfield on Friday, August 24 in a 7:30 p.m. start vs. the Stags.
Where To Watch || Friday's contest between the Seahawks and Stags was selected by the NCAA to be featured on the NCAA Soccer Facebook page. The live broadcast, which is set for 7:30 p.m. on Facebook Live, will be produced by the Stags Sports Network. Last fall, NCAA Soccer hosted Facebook Live broadcasts that included matches from the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA and Western Athletic Conference postseason tournaments. Currently, the NCAA Soccer Facebook page reaches more than 16,000 followers.
All-Time Against Fairfield || Friday's contest between Wagner and Fairfield is the eighth all-time meeting between the schools with the Stags leading the head-to-head series, 6-1-0. These two squads last met on August 23, 2015 in Orono, ME for the University of Maine Tournament with the Stags defeating the Seahawks, 2-1.
Wagner Against The MAAC || Against the current 11 members of the MAAC, Wagner is a combined 31-77-9 all-time. This record includes contests against former NEC members, Monmouth and Quinnipiac. The Seahawks haven't played either program since 2012. The Green & White dropped a 2-1 overtime decision at home to Rider back on Tuesday evening. This is the second of three scheduled contests against a MAAC school as Wagner will take on its final MAAC opponent on September 2, as the Seahawks host Iona at Hameline Field. Last season, the Green & White squared off against three MAAC schools (Rider, Saint Peter's and Iona), posting a 2-0-1 record, as they last tied Iona, 2-2, back on September 10 in New Rochelle.
Scouting Fairfield || The Stags enter play on Friday sporting a 2-0-0 record following a pair of 1-0 road victories at fellow Northeast Conference (NEC) member, LIU Brooklyn, and at Hofstra on Sunday, August 19. Amy Akerley and Hanley Courter have scored both goals for the Stags this season while Aytana Muschajew has recorded 14 saves thus far, nine of which came in Fairfield's last contest at Hofstra.
Nunez Nets First Seahawk Goal In 2018 || Junior captain, Maria Nunez, was able to head the ball past Rider's goalkeeper, Carmen Carbonell, after receiving the feed off a free kick from classmate Autumn Clark in scoring Wagner's first goal of the 2018 season. For Nunez, the score marked the fourth of her Seahawk career. As for Clark, the helper was the junior's first career assist.
Extra Sessions || Tuesday's overtime contest between Wagner and Rider marked the fourth extra session match the Seahawks have played under second-year head coach, Phil Casella. In those contest, Wagner is 0-1-3. Over the last five seasons, the Seahawks have played a total of eight matches that have gone into overtime, posting a record of 0-1-7.
Collegiate Debuts || In the home opener against Army West Point on August 17, second-year head coach Phil Casella elected to start to two freshmen in Luisa Barone and Christina Bacon. Barone played the full ninety and recorded her first collegiate shot on goal in the 30th minute of the contest. Bacon, played 80 minutes in her first collegiate start. Coach Casella elected to use newcomer Gabby Cipriano off the bench, as she logged 55 minutes of play. In the Seahawks most recent home contest against Rider, the fourth of Casella's five newcomers entered the game as a sub as Teagan Wasserman checked made her collegiate debut in the first half.
Shot Attempts || Against Rider on Tuesday evening, Wagner recorded a season-high 17 shots, with nine of those being on target, which included Maria Nunez's first goal of the season. After being held to a total of four shots in the season opener against Army West Point, the 17 shots are the most taken by the program since recording a total of 14 on the road at Saint Peter's back on September 6, 2017. Over the last five seasons, the 17 shots are the fourth-highest shot total, as Wagner blasted 36 total shots back on August 29, 2014 at home against Saint Peter's University.
Viscardi With The Save(s) || Senior goalkeeper Katie Viscardi stopped five of the seven shots she saw against Army in the season opener last Friday. The Hazlet, NJ native added two more stops against Rider, giving her 131 saves in her Seahawk career.
Up Next For Wagner || The Seahawks will close out its two-game road trip on Thursday, August 30 as they travel to Kingston, RI to take on Rhode Island.
