Women's Soccer Turns Away St. Michael's, 1-0
September 28, 2013
Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's soccer team played host to the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College in a Northeast-10 Conference contest earlier this afternoon. After a scoreless opening act, a second half goal off the head of Taylor Groth proved to be all the offense the Panthers would need as they came away with a 1-0 victory. With the win, the Panthers improve to 4-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the Northeast-10 while the Purple Knights drop to 0-7 and 0-5 in conference play.
Both teams sturggled to provide consistent offensive pressure in the opening half and Saint Michael's Carley Pestana was responsible for the only attempt by either side in nearly 30 minutes of play. Adelphi's first shot of the game came in the 32nd minute off of the foot of Aimee Goldstein, but was saved by Kaylee Sullivan. Victoria Antonino, Olivia Czavar, Meaghan Simmonds and Melissa Duarte all took shots for the Brown and Gold in the closing minutes of the half, but came away empty as the game headed to halftime scoreless.
The second half began in a similar fashion to the first as both teams struggled to take the upper hand on offense. The best chance for the visitors came in the 75th minute, as Amanda Shanahan beat the Adelphi defense and took a strong shot from the right side in a one-on-one situation against Whitney. However, Whitney leaned the right way and got her fingertips on the ball to make a diving save while an Adelphi defender cleared the ball.
With the threat averted, the Panthers took advantage. In the 77th minute, Czavar put in a corner kick which deflected off of a Saint Michael's defender and found the waiting Groth who headed it past Sullivan for her first goal of the season. The Panthers defense held the Purple Knights scoreless and shotless for the remainder of the game to secure their second conference win of the season.
Adelphi held a 10-8 advantage in total shots; they also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks, all of which came in the second half. Whitney was credited with the win and made three saves, while Sullivan made two in the losing effort.
