Kingston, RI – The Wagner College women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2018 season when the Seahawks earned a 1-0 victory on the road at the University of Rhode Island on Thursday evening.
With the win, the Green & White improves to 1-3 on the season, while the Rams fall to 0-4.
Sophomore Le'la Allen delivered the game-winning strike in the 78th minute when she received the feed from newcomer Gabby Cipriano. For Allen, it marked her second career collegiate goal while Cipriano earned her first career assist in tonight's match.
"We were very organized defensively and made it difficult for them to find their offensive stride," commented head coach Phil Casella. "We had a couple of chances in the first half but capitalized on a great cross from Gabby (Cipriano) and Le'la (Allen) made every effort to put the ball in the net. This was a well-earned win and now the focus is getting ready for Sunday afternoon against Iona."
The visitors had an early chance in the fourth minute as Cipriano took the corner kick delivered the ball into the box in which junior Autumn Clark was able to soar high in the air and head the ball towards the goal but misfired wide.
Rhode Island had its first chance in the 19th minute in a similar fashion as Madison Waldron booted the corner kick but was able to regain possession and blast a shot that was blocked by a Seahawk defender.
URI's best chance came in the 24th minute as Aysha Bentick found space and rocketed a shot on goal that was stopped by Wagner's senior goalkeeper, Katie Viscardi. For Viscardi, it marked the 136th save of her Seahawk tenure.
Wagner's freshman Luisa Barone had a chance in the 27th minute to put the Green & White on the board first, but her shot attempt was stopped by Julia Freeman, the first of three saves for her on the evening.
Clark had a second chance in the 34th minute, as she booted a shot that was corralled by Freeman in preserving the 0-0 tie. URI closed out the first half with three more shots, with all three going wide of the intended target.
When play resumed for the second half, it was Wagner who came out with the first offensive chance as sophomore Mya Donnelly misfired on her shot attempt to the right of the goalpost, keeping the match deadlocked at 0-0.J
The Rams narrowly scored the game's first tally as in the 51st minute, Jaileen Goncalves' shot attempt ricocheted off the crossbar and was sent out-of-play, setting up a corner kick for the home eleven. Following the set piece, URI's Kaitlyn Sengphilom's shot attempt sailed high over the goal.
The visitors nearly had the first goal in the 68th minute as junior captain Christine Letendre blasted a shot on goal but was denied by Freeman. Following a shot attempt by fellow captain, Maria Nunez, and regaining possession off the missed attempt from URI's Rebecca D'Anna, the Seahawks found the back-of-the net in the 78th minute off Allen's first goal of the season.
The Seahawks return home to Hameline Field looking for back-to-back victories as Wagner will welcome Iona College on Sunday, September 2. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on NECFrontRow.com.
