Women’s Soccer Wins MAAC Home Opener
Freshman midfielder Michele Tremblay’s first collegiate goal was the game-winner as Siena Women’s Soccer won its conference home opener 2-1 over Iona. Senior forward Maria Jones also scored for the Saints which have only been beaten once in their last six matches.
Tremblay scored the decisive tally in the 77th minute, firing a shot from the top of the box inside the right post after intercepting a misplayed ball by an Iona (4-6-1, 0-1-1) defender. Jones opened the scoring in the 30th minute for the Saints (4-5-2, 1-1), out-fighting Iona keeper Morgan McBrier for a loose ball deep in the box.
Charlotte Stuart pulled Iona even before the half, scoring her fifth goal of the season off a feed from Safi Ayinde in the 35th minute.
The Gaels held a slim 12-11 edge in shots, but senior captain Taylor Booth made two saves for Siena which is unbeaten in its last seven home matches against Iona (5-0-2).
Saturday’s match marked the only home contest for the Saints during a stretch where they play five of six on the road. Siena’s next two matches are both away from home, with a 7 p.m. kickoff Wednesday night at Marist up next.
