Women’s Soccer: Hope International Scores 13-0 Shutout over ACU
Fullerton, Calif. – Hope International University (3-3-0) dominated the action, outshooting Arizona Christian University, 35-0, and outscoring the Firestorm, 13-0, in Saturday, Sept. 17 intercollegiate women’s soccer action at Fullerton College.
Arizona Christian (1-3-0) competes next at Menlo College in Atherton, California, Friday, Sept.23, at 1 p.m., and at Mills College in Oakland, California, Saturday, Sept. 24, at 5 p.m. ACU’s victory this season was a 4-1 win over Mills, Sept. 10, at the Soka Peace Cup Tournament.
Arizona Christian coach Carl Cecil’s available roster included just 10 players due to four injuries. ACU missed its leading scorer, freshman forward Chelsea Ruland (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian Academy) who had scored three goals and three assists for nine points in the first three matches, and freshman forward Melinda Kleppe (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista H.S.) who had scored one goal and one assist in the first two matches prior to last week. Junior defender Christiana Hines (Flagstaff, Ariz./Boulder Creek H.S. (Anthem)/Paradise Valley CC/Glendale CC) and freshman defender Tamara Choate (Benson, Ariz./Benson H.S.) both missed Saturday’s match with leg injuries.
Playing one man short the entire match, ACU allowed nine goals and 23 shots, 11 on goal in the first half, and four more goals and 12 shot, seven directly on goal, in the second half. ACU’s freshman goalkeeper Kimberly Arias-Castro (Tolleson, Ariz./La Joya Community High School) saved 5 shots on goal in the match.
Midfielder Kristen Enriquez led Hope with 2 goals and 5 assists, and forwards Jordan Escoto and forward Megan Gonzalez each finished with three goals and one assist. Midfielder Stephanie Wilson and defender Shanell Thomas both scored two goals.
