Women’s Soccer: Marymount (Calif.) Scores 4-0 Win over ACU in Season Finale
Phoenix, Ariz. – Marymount College (6-8-4; 3-1-3 A.I.I.), from Rancho Palos Verdes, California, scored two goals in each half and defeated Arizona Christian University (3-10-0; 0-5-0 A.I.I.), 4-0, in Saturday, Oct. 29 collegiate women’s soccer action at Chuck Chambers Field on the campus of Scottsdale Christian Academy. ACU, coached by Carl Cecil, completes its 2011 season.
Marymount, which also defeated the Firestorm in California last weekend, 6-0, outshot ACU overall, 26-6, and 14-1 in shots on goal, and also led 6-2 in corner kicks. ACU’s freshman forward Chelsea Ruland (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian Academy) attempted five of ACU’s total shots and its only shot on goal in the match. Ruland banged a shot off the crossbar just 5:37 into the match, and nearly scored a breakaway goal in the 83rd minute of the match. Ruland finished her freshman season as ACU’s single-season and career goals leader with 10, and also assisted three times.
Marymount goalkeeper Andrea Poeschel made the save on Ruland’s shot on goal at 59:44, and ACU’s freshman goalkeeper Kimberly Arias-Castro (Tolleson, Ariz./La Joya Community H.S.) saved 10 shots and finished the season with 139 saves this season, including 10 or more saves in nine of ACU’s 13 matches. She saved seven shots on goal in the first half and three more in the second half against Marymount.
Midfielder Kiri Christiansen, from Denmark, scored Marymount’s first goal at 11:46 of the first half and its fourth goal at 69:13 of the second half on hard shots from 20 and 30 yards respectively. Forward McKenna Reiser scored the Mariners’ second goal of the first half at 29:58 and their third goal of the match and first of the second half at 60:22, both on assists from forward Marney O’Toole. Reiser and Christiansen each attempted six shots and combined for seven shots on goal.
