Women's Team of the Week: August 30
Sunshine Fontes’ first goal against CSUN was skillful — a couple of touches to evade defenders, swiftly followed by a trike into the top corner from just inside the box. The second was more emphatic, a smashed shot into the top corner with her weak foot. The third was precise, a free kick whipped over the wall and past a sprawling goalkeeper.
The trio of goals combined for an impressive hat-trick, capping off a dominant Thursday afternoon performance to propel UCLA to a 2-0 record. Fontes was at it again on Sunday. This time, she only needed one, a shot thrashed into the back of the net from 20 yards out — the sole goal in a 1-0 win over Santa Clara.
Those four goals — all scored within 101 minutes of game time — were vital in UCLA’s emphatic start to the 2022 season. If Fontes keeps scoring, the Bruins will be hard to stop.
Player of the Week: Sunshine Fontes, UCLA
Here are 10 others that starred during week two of play:
GK Bre Norris, Portland - Norris tallied seven saves for the Pilots against an active Washington State attack, keeping her second straight clean sheet.
D Brittany Munson, James Madison - The junior from New York played a key role in a pair of shutout wins for the Dukes, as they’ve yet to concede a goal in four games. She played the bulk of the minutes at the back in road wins against Charlotte and La Salle.
D Maya Evans, UCLA - The central defender was a crucial piece in the back line for the Bruins, helping keep two clean sheets this week. She chipped in at the other end, too, knocking in a header in UCLA’s win over CSUN.
D Mieke Schiemann, Penn State - Schiemann was stout defensively for the Nittany Lions, shoring up a defense that has only conceded three goals in four games — despite playing two ranked opponents. She also contributed going forward, scoring twice and assisting once last week.
M Avery Patterson, North Carolina - The outside midfielder scored twice against texas to give UNC its first road win of the season. Her two goals opened up what had been a tricky game for the Heels.
M Thorhildur Thorhallsdottir, Hofstra - Hofstra’s latest international import has hit the ground running in New York. She bagged a brace as the Pride beat UAlbany, scoring the second and third goals in a convincing 3-0 win.
F Jameese Joseph, NC State - Joseph is making a habit of scoring big goals, highlighted by an 89th minute winner for the Wolfpack. She scored again against Georgetown, this time from long range to put NC State 1-0 up.
F Haley Hopkins, Virginia - Hopkins had a prolific week, scoring Virginia’s winner against Georgetown before adding a hat trick against FDU(w). The fifth year now has five goal contributions in four games.
F Lily Farkas, Michigan - Farkas kept the Wolverines rolling last week, scoring the winning goal against Boston College with an emphatic finish. She followed that up with a top performance against Boston University, contributing to three of the six Michigan goals in a rout of the Terriers.
F Messiah Bright, TCU - Bright started the season slowly — going without a goal or assist in her first two games. But she exploded last week, tallying four goals and an assist as TCU thrashed Santa Clara and UTRGV. The first one, a deft chop and finish against Santa Clara, was one of the goals of the week.
