Women's Top 25: College Cup edition
The women’s College Cup field is set, all without making a dent in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25.
All of the top four teams entering quarterfinal action clinched spots at Cary after the second-to-last weekend of games.
No. 1 Florida State rolled past ACC foes Boston College 4-0 on Friday. The Seminoles scored three times in the second half – including a pair of tallies by Marta Bakowska-Mathews to overpower their conference foes.
The other all-ACC matchup over the holiday weekend took place in Blacksburg, Va., as No. 3 Virginia Tech bested Duke 3-0. After the Blue Devils missed a couple of chances in the first half, Katie Yensen’s tally eight seconds before halftime was a killer blow – the Hokes tacked on a pair from Shannon Mayrose and Jazmine Reeves to seal the program’s first College Cup appearance in its history.
Also punching a ticket – the first at this stage of the tournament since 1991 – was No. 2 Virginia. In a grueling encounter with Michigan, the Cavaliers topped the Wolverines 2-1 at Klockner Stadium. Midfielder Morgan Brian tallied again for UVA, while Molly Menchel provided the second half winner to book a trip to Cary.
Rounding out the field, and also knocking out the powerhouse and defending champion North Carolina, was No. 3 UCLA. It was a gilt-edged affair between two of the nation’s best defenses, that the Bruins edged 1-0 thanks to Taylor Smith’s goal in the second overtime.
