Woodson Lifts Warhawks to 7th Straight Win
Jenna Woodson scored on a penalty kick at 11:38 to lift the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Saturday at Bollinger Field in Eau Claire. The Warhawks (10-2, 4-0 WIAC) have now won seven in a row, six of which have been shutouts. The school record for consecutive wins is 11, set back in 2003.
The first ten minutes of play were fairly quiet with just one corner kick by UW-Eau Claire, and one shot by UW-Whitewater. Things livened up significantly at 11:38. The Blugold goalkeeper was issued a red card for fouling Jenna Woodson, thus resulting in a penalty kick. Woodson knocked it in for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 Warhawk lead.
The rest of the first half fell quiet. The two teams combined for four more shots in the remaining 33 minutes before halftime.
UW-Eau Claire turned up the heat in the second half, recording two shots in the first ten minutes, but neither was on net.
At the other end of the field Carina Krausert put the ball on net at 56:08 looking for UW-Whitewater's second goal, but substitute goalkeeper Rachel Griffiths made the save.
The Blugolds managed two more shots before the 60-minute mark, but that was it for the game, as they totaled five shots, none on goal.
Marie Lesperance had an opportunity to stretch the Warhawk lead to two in the 62nd minute, but Griffiths again made the save. A minute later Krausert ripped a shot towards the goal, but was denied by the post.
A defensive battled followed, and only two shots were tallied in the final 25 minutes of play. UW-Whitewater's senior goalkeeper Jordan Myers earned the shutout win, her seventh of the season and 29th of her career.
The Warhawks have now won 25 straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches. "I'm proud of the team keeping our defensive discipline to find a WIAC road win," UW-Whitewater coach Ryan Quamme stated after the game.
UW-Whitewater will travel to Chicago, Illinois on October 8th for a non-conference match against North Park beginning at 7 pm.
