WSOC: Hofstra Blanks Bonnies
Hempstead, N.Y. - Freshmen Jill Mulholland and Leah Galton scored goals for Hofstra and the Pride held a 17-3 shot advantage to defeat St. Bonaventure, 2-0, on Friday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Emily Morphitis (London, England) stopped the only on-net shot she faced to pick up her second shutout of the season and the sixth individual shutout of her career. Hofstra improved to 3-3 overall while St. Bonaventure fell to 0-6-1.
Galton (Harrogate, England) assisted on the first goal for the three-point night while junior Amber Stobbs (London, England) posted a game-high five shots.
Hofstra controlled possession, building a plus-14 shot differential, including a 9-1 first-half edge. Mulholland (Levittown, N.Y.) picked up the opening goal in the 11th minute, taking Galton's cross and beating the Bonnies goalkeeper Megan Junker to the left for her second goal of the season.
Junker kept St. Bonaventure in the game in her first start of the season, posting seven saves. She stopped the first four Hofstra on-goal shots in the second half before Galton scored a key insurance goal off a corner with just 3:33 remaining. The goal was Galton's second of the campaign.
Junior Ruby Staplehurst picked up the assist after initiating the corner. The London, England native was active all game on the edges as Hofstra built a 10-2 corner-kick advantage.
Hofstra snapped a three-game losing streak with all three defeats coming by a single goal. The Pride capitalized on their home field in getting back to .500. Head coach Simon Riddiough's team is 2-0 at Hofstra Soccer Stadium this year and has not given up a goal at home after blanking Ohio State, 2-0, in the season opener on Aug. 17. Hofstra is now 89-20-8 at home since 1999 after winning the first all-time matchup against the Bonnies.
The Pride will next be in action on Sunday when the team hits the road to take on Marist at 1 p.m. The Red Foxes are coming off an appearance in last year's NCAA Tournament.
