WVU Routs Towson
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s soccer team used four second half goals, including two from junior Frances Silva, to post a 5-0 blanking of visiting Towson Friday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
“It was a nice collective effort tonight,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We really connected our passes and finally put some balls away.”
The five goals tonight are the most against a non-conference opponent since WVU’s 5-1 win over Xavier on Sept. 16, 2007.
“It is a funny game sometimes,” said Izzo-Brown. “We’ve been creating chances but simply weren’t finishing them. And putting one or two goals away changes the flow and tempo of the game.
“Tonight, our ladies did a great job of staying focused and finishing our chances in the final third (of the field).”
The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute off the foot of sophomore Kate Schwindel. Senior Bry McCarthy played a long ball into the middle where Silva flicked it on to a charging Schwindel. Schwindel took one touch and fired a shot from 22 yards out over the head of goalkeeper Erin Quinn and into the back of the net.
The goal was Schwindel’s team-leading fifth of the season. She has scored a goal in three-straight matches and four of the last five.
